Ann Christiansen - School Counseling Student Chair
I grew up in a little town in northwest Iowa that I still call "home." After graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in sociology, psychology, and criminal justice, I worked for a few years as a correctional counselor. I married my husband, Joe, and started a family, so I spent the next several years in a great, mom-friendly position in banking.
Now that our three daughters are older, I have chosen to complete my M.S.Ed. in school counseling at Buena Vista University. I currently serve on BVU's Graduate Student Advisory Committee. I worked for three years as an early childhood associate and grant writer before beginning my career this past school year as a K-8 school counselor shared between two private schools in the Des Moines metro.
Our family attends Assumption of the BVM Parish in Granger, where we are all active volunteers in different capacities. I was a Girl Scout leader for several years, and I am a current and founding board member of the non-profit organization, the Eating Disorder Coalition of Iowa. I have been a member of both ASCA and ISCA for the past two years, and I've presented at the annual conference for ISCA as well as for the Iowa School Nurse Organization and the Iowa Family & Consumer Sciences Educators. I keep extremely busy with my own and my family's activities, but in the rare moments of free time I have, I enjoy reading, creating art, and spending time with friends around our fire pit! My family cheers for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Iowa State Cyclones, and we have two dogs, a Yorkie-Maltese named Chloe and a Cockapoo, Sophie. I also have a fish in my counseling office named Benedict (aka Benny).
My passion lies in helping children reach their full potential. I am a constant and lifelong learner, so it seems only natural for me to accept the honor and privilege of serving as this year's ISCA School Counseling Graduate Student Chair. I am excited for this opportunity to work with and learn from those who are equally passionate about our roles as school counselors! Want to connect via social media?
