Government Relations Chair
My name is Corey Trainer and I am the K-1 Elementary School Counselor at Oskaloosa Elementary School in Oskaloosa Iowa. I received my B.A. in Criminal Justice and Sociology from Iowa State University. Recently I graduated with my M.A. in School Counseling from The University of Northern Iowa. While at UNI I served on our Student Advisory Council, and headed a project to acclimate incoming graduate students to the school counseling program through a mentoring program.
This is my first year on the ISCA board, and I am excited to serve as Government Relations Chair. My job is to promote advocacy for school counselors across the state. I am looking forward to growing the Committee as a whole. I also work closely with Iowa Association for College Admission Counseling and their yearly conference, Visit the Hill. Visit the hill is a combination of advocacy training and actual advocacy at the Iowa State Capital in Des Moines, Iowa. Visit the hill is a great opportunity to make real life connections with your legislators. Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any questions about Visit the Hill or Government Relations in general!
I enjoy spending my spare time with my fiancé Katie Kennicott who is a Kindergarten teacher in Waterloo, Iowa. I love cooking, fishing, gaming, grilling, and college sports. I enjoy visiting family and friends across the state. I usually spend my summers at my families lake cabin in Northern Minnesota, a tradition my family has kept alive for almost 5 generations.
In a time of tightening budgets and shifting sands at the state capital, it is dire that we as school counselors make our voices heard. I look forward to working with the board and making sure counselors remain an imperative part of schools statewide.
